Nintendo's New IP game for Wii U, Splatoon, is Nintendo's take on a shooter. Splatoon consists of players on 4v4 teams that can shoot/paint ink and turn into squid, in attempt of covering the area with the most ink of their team's color. Splatoon also features a story mode that players can test their skills on. Today, I present to you a Splatoon review. Enjoy!
Pre-Thoughts
When I first heard of Splatoon I was a bit shocked as Nintendo was not known for shooters. However, I figured it would be something creative since it was from Nintendo (and I was right). After watching a few Nintendo Directs on Splatoon, I slowly began to become interested in the game. After having a solid idea of how the game would work, I began watching gameplay from many sources and I fell in love with the art style, concept, e.t.c.
Gameplay Thoughts
While actually playing the game, I really enjoyed it. During the global test-fire, I disliked the controls due to having to use the game-pad's gyroscope to aim your weapon, which was really annoying. Luckily, when I played the full game, I was able to change the controls to fit my comfort. I had played the story mode first and I really enjoyed it. The story mode opened up many cool things to do and interesting worlds to play in. After playing around in story mode, I began playing online games. In online matches, you get paired with 3 other players and go against a team of 4 other players. However, this is without a voice chat which is, in ways, a good thing and a bad thing. Online matches have a really large variety of weapons to choose from; sniping-guns, regular guns, melee weapons, and more. I had to play turf war until I reached level 10 from playing online games, and then I was able to play ranked battles which feature Tower Defense and Area Control, which are both really fun. While playing online matches, you earn cash that can be spent to unlock new weapons. Although there are many weapons to choose from, most weapons are upgraded clones of other weapons.
Also, Nintendo is doing a really good job keeping Splatoon fresh. There is an update almost every 2 weeks which bring new weapons, stages, game modes and more. Another way they are keeping Splatoon fresh, is with Amiibos which, with 3 different Amiibos available as of now, offer revised gameplay of the main story mode.

Final Thoughts
In conclusion, Nintendo did a really good job in developing and in updating Splatoon. With online multiplayer, and an enjoyable story mode, Splatoon is a great, unique version of a shooter. I recommend it for casual and somewhat intense players that enjoy getting competitive. Splatoon will most likely stay alive for a while thanks to it's DLC and game modes constantly being added.
Overall Score: 9/10
